Extended family shoots are a wonderful thing to have. I think its important for families to get together atleast every 5 years to have a portrait like this taken. When's the last time your family got together for an extended family portrait? Need to put that on your to-do list this year?

We switched gears after the extended family session into maternity mode. Stephanie and Frank are expecting a baby girl soon. We all thought this session would be a great time to capture a few moments between the expecting parents!

Giving Back to our Troops: Tyrrell County 4H

Tyrrell County’s Tyrrell Tornadoes 4-H Club is Putting Together Solider Care Packages

North Carolina 4-H is proud to support active duty, reserve and guard troops who call our state home. Particularly during this time of global deployment, these soldiers need to know that their families here at home are surrounded by supportive citizens.

During this holiday season Tyrrell County’s Tyrrell Tornadoes 4-H Club has set up drop-boxes in different locations around the county to collect items that they will soon package and send to soldiers that are currently deployed. They are asking the community to come together to help them collect items by donating things they can package and send.

Items may include (and are not limited to):
• Food/Snack: beef jerky, slim jims, sunflower seeds, tuna in foil pouches, protein bars, hot chocolate packets, gum, individually wrapped hard candy, cereal bars, trail mix, nuts, popcorn
• Toiletries: travel size baby wipes, travel size liquid hand sanitizer, travel size deodorant, combs, brushes, sunblock, bug spray, cotton balls, toothpaste, toothbrushes, dental floss, baby powder
• Entertainment/Games: stationary, envelopes, blank cards to send home, double sided tape, pens, mechanical pencils, notepads, calendars, yo-yos, playing cards, dice, Frisbees, disposable cameras, itunes gift cards, board games, dominoes, game books (crosswords, Sudoku, etc.)
• Other Items: linens (pillow cases, twins sheets, towels – green or tan), patriotic knick-knacks, black or green duct tape, winter hats and blankets, coffee filters, holiday decorations, inspirational readings, dust masks, small alarm clocks

Boxes were delivered back on November 22nd to the following businesses in Tyrrell County: Cypress Cove Marina, Windy Rose- Attorney, Jones Insurance, Albemarle Service Center, Nationwide, and the temporary Cooperative Extension office at the Senior Citizen’s Building. Your donation of items can be dropped off at any of the following places of business. This is the last week to drop of items as boxes will be collected the morning of Monday, December 19th and the 4-Hers will package everything at their meeting that afternoon.

If you'd like to donate items and can't get to any of the Tyrrell County locations, please let me know, I'll be glad to help collect your donation.

November is a peaceful, pretty time of year. The lush greenery of summer has faded to muted shades of nature, and clouds hover above us and speak of the coming winter-not a warning so much as a word of advice from a trusted friend. The seasons are changing, and the pace of life has moved into a different rhythm.

We've entering into the holiday season and I'm sure the majority of you are celebrate Thanksgiving today. This time of year summons up many warm memories of gathering around the family table (or being sequestered to the kids' table) enjoying a special meal surrounded by family and friends.

Thanksgiving is a lovely holiday. It's marvelous to have a day set apart to be grateful for all we enjoy. My good fortune overwhelms me with gratitude, and I want you to know that you are included in my list of blessings. Your friendship and patronage has warmed my heart. I love to see my clients' smiles and hear the laughter of a family posing for a portrait that will be cherished for decades. Touching the lives of friends and neighbors with my portraiture is my dream come true.

I hope your Thanksgiving is filled with love, sweet moments shared with someone special, gratitude, and laughter. I hope you make memories to cherish forever.

Please excuse the cell phone photo. All of my equipment was off getting tuned and squeaky clean when my family and I went to pick grapes down in Gum Neck. This was actually the only photo that shows proof that we went. I didn't take any photos while we were there because we had to pick quick or the mosquitoes would have picked you up and carried you away! :)

Whitney | Raleigh Bridal Portrait Photographer

Whitney and I met each other our freshman year at Meredith College. I was excited and honored when she called last year and asked me if I'd be interested in photographing her bridal portraits and wedding. We met for lunch after not seeing each other for sometime and had time to catch-up and talk weddings!

Fast-forward a year later and her big day has come and gone. She married her prince, Richie, last Saturday, and today they're frolicking in Jamaica as Mr. & Mrs. Clayton! Now that she's married, I can show you her bridal portraits. We started her session off at the Raleigh Little Theatre in the Rose Garden. The first photo is one of my most favorite bridal images.

Whitney has a doggie, Gabel, that she wanted included in some of her images.

After some time at the Raleigh Rose Garden we went to Meredith College for the rest of her portraits. The following photo is the one she chose to display as a framed 16x24 at her wedding reception.

#68: Attend the 2011 Jones Reunion

Each year my paternal grandfather's family gets together for a small reunion in May. This year I was able to attend. It was great to see everyone, but I really enjoyed seeing all of the photographs that my cousins had brought. I learned while at the reunion that my Uncle Sam, my grandfather's brother, loved photography too and took lots of photos. I guess that's where I get it from?!

The next picture is a photo of my Grandaddy as a young boy! Isn't he handsome? :)

Lots of pictures but I decided to focus on the center image of some of Dora & Ashby's grandkids. I think that picture is too cute of them all piled in the boat!

This particular book was designed from Amy's maternity session and newborn session.

Press Printed Books are available in many sizes and with many paper type options. Choose from different cover material options including a variety of fabrics, leathers and suedes, or a custom photo cover. Photo covers are made with a photographic print that is laminated and adhered to the masonite cover. The photo cover allows for complete customization on the front, spine, and back of the book using your own images and designs (as seen in the example above).

Frieda {2012 Senior Session}

This year I started something called Megan Lane Photography Senior Reps. Basically 2012 Seniors applied to be a rep and in return (if chosen) they got a really good deal on their session and also get discounts on other things (prints and products) based on the amount of people they recruit for Megan Lane Photography. They don't have to recruit just other seniors, they can refer newborn sessions, family sessions, etc. and earn discounts to what they want. Frieda is one of my senior reps this year so she's had the opportunity to have two sessions.

Her mini-session took place down at her family's property on the soundside.

Since it feels like Christmas with my new blog design being live, I thought it would be a great time to post about Christmas Cards! :)

Sending Christmas Cards is a great way to honor the traditions that make Christmas such an important part of our lives. In our world of emails, texts, and tweets, opening the mailbox to find a personalized Christmas card is more of a special feeling today than ever before. A card is a warm, personal way to say to friends and family, "I remember". I remember the mesmerizing bubble lights on Mom’s tree, I remember the scrumptious aroma of Grandma’s gingerbread and the unbearable anticipation of Christmas morning, and most of all I remember you!

I've known Sarah for a long time. She was a few years younger than me in school but we were both active in 4H so we got to see each other then. I first met her fiance, Russ, during their engagement session and it was fun to reconnect with Sarah and learn about Russ and details of their upcoming wedding! Fastforward a few months and the wedding is over and I'm able to share her bridal portraits with you. We met up at the Elizabethan Gardens in Manteo for her session because this was also going to be the ceremony and reception site. Other than a few mosquitos, the Gardens were gorgeous!

The following photo is the image that Sarah chose for her portrait, except she chose it in a vintage sepia tone rather than full color.

I can't tell you how much I love, love, love this song. I've always been a Blake Shelton fan but this song put him over the top for me. I truely believe that God puts people in our lives for a reason. Sometimes we may not know those reasons, sometimes we do. I knew I wanted to feature this video on a Thursday's Tunes, but I've never seen the video until today when I went searching for it to post it. I thought the video was too sweet that Blake's wife, Miranda (they're just newly-weds) was featured first in his video. Seeing that I was pretty sure that's what the video would be about the boyfriend/girlfriend, husband/wife relationships, but I had to grab a kleenex when after Miranda, the first relationship shown was of a Mother and Daughter. Not only am I so thankful for everyone (family, friends, clients, strangers you pass by, etc) that God has put in my life, but I'm so blessed with an amazing Mother who is also my best friend and I'm so blessed that God gave me a child. My daughter has taught me more about life in the past two-and-a-half years then I would have ever learned without her. Thanks Blake Shelton for an amazing song and an even more amazing video!

Erin and I have been friends for years now. I was honored when she asked me to photograph her engagement and bridal session as well as her big day! Her engagement session is still one of the most fun times I've had during a session!

Her and Marc tied the knot a few weeks ago and the wedding was as fun as the engagment session x10! I'll save more info on the wedding for it's own blog post, but now that they are married, I'm excited to share some of her bridal portraits with you. We met up at Peace College (I don't think I'll ever be able to call it William-Peace University) where Erin went to school. Although Peace is considered my rival, since I'm a Meredith girl, I can't deny that their small, intimate campus is beautiful, and makes a great backdrop for sessions like this.

Miss Corder gave her Mommy & Daddy a little scare when she was born. Born at only 4 pounds 4 ounces, she had to spend some time in the NICU after birth, but she's just as healthy now, and adorable as she can be. I use to teach with her Mommy. Her Mommy is one of the most amazing teachers I've ever met and SO creative too!

This lovely family vacationed this year in Corolla. I was referred to them by their friend that was also vacationing down on the OBX at the same time, who'd heard about me from a previous client. I'm extremely thankful when clients give my name and web address to other people. That's one of the best compliments I could ever receive!

These kiddos go to bed early so their session was earlier in the afternoon than normal. But we were fortunate to get some amazing backlighting for their portrait session.

I met up with this beebster's Mama for maternity pictures, just before he decided to make his debut, a couple of weeks early! :)

I had been hunting for an old egg basket for a while now and stumbled upon this one in a random store one day. I was so glad to be able to use it with Baby Bruin. He posed for me just right too! :)

Amber and Chad got hitched yesterday! {Congrats you two!} Although I wasn't the photographer for the wedding I was honored to take Amber's bridal portraits! I love when brides come up with locations for portraits that are outside of the norm for this particular kind of session. Amber was no different. She and Chad are huge ECU fans. Amber was even crowned Miss ECU when she was a senior there. Because they are huge fans of ECU football and rarely miss a game, she knew exactly where she wanted her portraits taken and I couldn't have been more excited about her choice!

I had the pleasure of meeting baby Gatlin when he was just 6 days new. Not sure he was too fond of me since he peed on me twice, but I think he's pretty stinkin' cute either way! :)

Gatlin has two handsome big brothers to look out for him.

Since Gatlin's Mommy and Daddy have a love for horses we decided to incorporate his Daddy's saddle in some photos! I'm so glad we did!

You may remember Miss Camille from her past posts on this blog. I was able to photographer her as a newborn and again at a year old. This time her Daddy's family was taking a trip to the Outer Banks and I was invited to take a few photos on the beach of the extended family.

This session was a little tricky. The Outer Banks has been battling lots of smoke due to the Pains Bay Fire which began on May 5th. Currently 45,294 acres has been burned. Depending on wind direction and other things determines which nearby counties get lots of smoke in their area. I have had a few sessions at the OBX already this year and somehow managed to dodge the smoke or end up driving out of it by the time I got to my session. This particular evening with the Cox family, I wasn't so lucky. I do think we managed to get some great shots of their family. Although the sky behind them is smoky/hazy, I do like the feel it gives to some of the parituclar images.

Gwen + Eric {Married} | Outer Banks Wedding Photography

Eric and Gwen knew each other when they both attended Chocowinity High School, but it was a few years after high school when they actually got to know each other. Eric was best friends with Gwen's cousin, David. Gwen visited David one day and Eric happened to be there too and they all began hanging out. Soon, Eric and Gwen started dating and after 14 years Eric finally proposed Christmas 2010. She found her ring in her stocking!! Gwen told me it was really fun to watch the shock on everyone's faces when they found she finally had a ring. She says she thought everyone had given up on them. :) I know Gwen's glad she didnt give up!

One thing Gwen loves to do is go to the beach. She and Eric have spent a lot of time on the beach so when they were talking about where to have the wedding, they both agreed on somewhere on the Outer Banks. On May 29, Gwen, Eric and all of their family and friends met in South Nags Head at a beautiful beach cottage to exchange vows. I hope you enjoy these photos of their day...

Gwen's bouquet was extra special. Tied to her bouquet were her mother & step-father's wedding rings. Her step-father passed away and wasn't able to be a part of her wedding day. This was a way that he could be present and close to her on her big day.

Miss Molly Jane was born to one of my dearest friends. Her Mommy and I have been friends since elementary school. Went through elementary, middle, and high together and even roomed together our first two years of college. I couldn't be more happy for this little one to be born to such a wonderful Mommy and Daddy. Her Mommy and Daddy's wedding was the first wedding I ever photographed. I was honored to photograph Molly Jane this new milestone in their life too!

I had the opportunity to do some updated headshots of Deborah a few weeks ago. Deborah is an author, speaker, and marriage and family therapist in private practice. In addition to marriage and family counseling, she specializes in personal growth and development, disaster, trauma, grief and loss, divorce, and issues related to abuse in childhood.

One of her books, Stupid about Men, is a book for women who are tired of kissing frogs. :) It shows women how we have been falsely influenced by the myths of fairy tales, and then offers understanding of how to break free and move into the reality of true womanhood. From this book has spun her newest adventure that just went live this month, Life AFTER Stupid!

With Life After Stupid, Deborah's goal is to help men and women put their past in their past and move forward toward happier and healthier relationships and living. It is a series of live broadcasts that you can call in on Sunday evenings at 9:30 to be a part of. You can also check out the website and listen to past poscasts as well.

Greyson is expecting a baby brother this month! I got to meet up with them at Somerset Place on a HOT day, but Mom totally rocked it, 37 week belly and all. I can photograph babies with little baby fever but for some reason when I see a pregnant woman I get baby fever way more. Even with 4 months of sickness, I loved being pregnant and miss that feeling.

Friends at the Beach

This group of friends packed up and traveled to the OBX for a week of fun! How fun to go on vacation with your closests buds and their kiddos. I photographed Kristen & Carey's little one just after she was born. I was excited when Kristen contacted me once their vacation plans were settled for last month to see if I'd be up for meeting them on the Outer Banks for a session on the beach for her and her friends. The day of their session there was some serious wind gusts whipping around but we decided to go ahead with the session and I think we managed to show the wind that it wasn't going to stop us from playing in the sand!

Little did I know when I photographed this family last fall that they were expecting a little one. Soon the news spread that another little boy would join their clan and a couple of weeks ago I had the opportunity to photograph their sweet and handsome new addition at just 4 days old. He did so good. He was sleepy the entire time and I was able to move him and position him to get lots of different images.

Gwen {bridals}

Now that Gwen & Eric tied the knot on Sunday I can finally share her bridal portraits. Although the wind was tough this particular day, Gwen was a trooper! We started off under the Outer Banks Pier.

Then went on the pier for a few more shots.

Once we were finished at the pier we headed down the beach for some more shots.

I'm excited to be able to share their wedding images soon. It was my first beach wedding and so much fun!

Baby Parker | North Carolina Newborn Photographer

Baby Parker was exactly one day old when he visited the studio for his newborn session. Lately I have had lots of newborns around the 6-14 day range and they've all given me a run for my money and wanted to be wide awake to see what was going on in their new world. Another reminder that the sooner the better for newborn sessions. Little Parker gave a good fight but eventually fell asleep for me. Although he wasn't in a deep sleep I was able to move him around to get some different shots. WARNING: may cause baby fever! ;)

Connor | North Carolina Children's Photographer

I met up with Connor and his Mommy at one of my favorite session locations, Somerset Place. This NC historical site has lots of wide open spaces for little boys like Connor to run around in. Conner is newly walking so he still has a little wobble to him, but he can get where he wants to go. It was so much fun chasing after him; I definitely got my exercise for the day!

We had to get a few photos with his Mommy too!

All of that wide open spaces sure did make Connor a sleepy boy. His Mommy called me within 5 minutes on the way home and said that he was already asleep.

Sarah & Russ | Columbia, NC Engagement Photography

Sarah & Russ are getting ready to tie the knot! We met up down at the boat ramp on Frying Pan Road to begin their session. We had hoped to have to small wooden boat for them to drift around in but the boat began taking on water when they launched it earlier in the day to "test" it out so we were on to plan B. I think their images turned out great even with no boat!

After a quick clothing change we ventured over to an old barn that sits along the side of the road. This barn was a really cool spot to shoot.

Jennifer & James | Outer Banks Engagement Photographer

I met up with Jennifer & James just two weeks after their engagement. Jennifer and I have a mutual friend, Melissa, that as soon as she heard Jennifer's good news called to gift an engagement session to her and her fiance. {How cool is that? Great gift, huh?}

We first met up at Jennifer's parent's house on the OBX and went to a beach that Jennifer frequented while growing up.

From there we went to a friend of Jennifer's over in Martin's Point. They had a wonderful pier for us to shoot on and around.

If you're a big fan of American Idol then I'm sure you've heard lots about Scotty McCreery, young NC boy, who has made it to the top 3! Garner is only about 30 minutes from our house and on Saturday they welcomed him home since the show began. I'm not sure of all of the festivities but I do know the local radio station hosted him as well as the grocery store he worked at before his AI spotlight began. He also had a hometown concert where his idol, Josh Turner surprised him. I found this video of the surprise and wanted to share it.

Tonight's the big night for American Idol too. Tonight one goes home and they're left with 2. Think Scotty will make the cut again? Good luck, Scotty!

Baby Jackson

Baby Jackson came to visit and he couldn't be more excited about making his photosession debut, see what I mean? Isn't that smile adorable?! :)

Normally it's best for newborns to be sleeping during their session. It makes them easier to mold and position for photos. Jackson was so excited he wasn't up for much sleeping. It took his Mommy and I, quite a while to get him to sleep, but once we did. I think we got some adorable shots.

Jackson's Mommy found this adorable Sock Monkey diaper cover and hat on Etsy from NewbornBabyLove's shop. This lady is incredibly talented and has SO many cute things in her shop that I'd love to have. Lucky for me, Jackson's Mommy let me buy the outfit from her because Mr. Jackson was almost grown out of it anyway! So, I'm excited to add it to my collection and use it with other babies!

I couldn't decide which sock money outfit I liked best, so I figured I'd share both! :)

What to Wear?

I have many clients that ask about outfit ideas when it comes to their family portraits. Something to remember is that there is no need to focus on matching everything from the color of your shirt to the color of everyone else's shirt in the photo. In fact, if you don't then there's so much more character that you can add to the photograph. There's no need to worry about each and every item, this is suppose to be a fun process.

When doing some research myself about outfit options for portrait sessions I came across another photographer, Kristin Rachelle, who put together these family outfit examples for her clients. I emailed her and with her permission I'm allowed to share them with you! It’s so hard sometimes to see how everything will look together and photograph in pictures, so hopefully these ideas will help!

Hope this helps you to see how items can be different, yet tie together too!

Someone's turning TWO!

Today, on this Mother's Day, I not only celebrate my Mother but also the day I became a Mother. Two years ago today my life was forever changed. I can't imagine my life any other way than having my baby girl by my side.

Meredith College | Class Day

Today I'm celebrating my daughter's second birthday with family and friends. Her actual birthday isn't until tomorrow but today's the day we chose to celebrate.

Today, I'm also thinking about my alma mater, Meredith College. This week they have been celebrating commencement week and celebrating the Class of 2011. Meredith College was an amazing place to go to college. One of the best things about Meredith aside from class size and beautiful campus, were its many traditions. On the Saturday of commencement weekend. Sophomores honor their senior "big sisters", and the seniors highlight their College years in an event called "Class Day".

The little sisters spend the morning constructing two 75–100 foot daisy chains to be used for the afternoon’s Class Day exercises in the beautiful amphitheater. The white-clad sophomores hold two daisy chains and sing as their sister class marches through the chains. Class historians recall and depict key events of the graduating class’ four years at Meredith. The sophomore and alumnae sister classes sing traditional songs to the seniors. The members of the odd year classes wear black gloves on their left hands and give their little sisters wish bone charms for luck. The even classes give their little sisters bags of sticks and stones “to protect them from the Odd Spirit’s bones.”

At the conclusion of Class Day, the sophmores and the chains form the class numerals of the graduating class. The seniors then go onto the island, form a circle around the numerals, and celebrate with their classmates.

I was cleaning out a chest this week and found this photo of me and my family from my Class Day. I had to scan it in because I wasn't digital back then. :)

Ashley + Josh | Married {Part Two}

Incase you missed Part One of Ashley + Josh's wedding you can catch that here. After their gorgeous, small ceremony at Somerset Plantation guests and the newly wed couple went to the Eastern 4H Center for some delicious food and dancing.

After Ashley + Josh were announced they took the dance floor and DJ Cowboy played "Lost in This Moment" by Big and Rich.

After their special first dance Ashley's Dad and Josh's Mother joined them on the dance floor.

Their cake was too cute- made by Your Perfect Cake out of Greenville, NC. Not only did it look cute, but it was delicious too!

Baby David | Newborn Session

David was just a few days old for his session. His session took place at his grandmother's house. The light in her bedroom was ah-mazing! I want a studio with walls and floors and windows just like that one day! :)

Usually babies are so cuddly and sleepy at this stage, but baby David didn't want to miss a thing. He fought sleep the entire time. Just as I'd think he was asleep and start snapping away- he was wide awake again! :) But as you can tell from the pictures below he's absolutely adorable either way! Here's a few from our session...

Calling all 2012 Seniors! I’m looking for energetic juniors that are interested in becoming 2012 senior representative for Megan Lane Photography. I will be collecting applications until May 11, 2010 from anyone wanting to be considered as one of my reps. I will choose one female and one male student from each local high school in early May.

In order to be a senior rep, you must enjoy being in front of the camera, be a current high school junior graduating in 2012, and agree to tell your friends and classmates about Megan Lane Photography and share your senior portraits with them. Please note that this does not include senior drape/tux photography.

In the whirlwind of placing Easter Mini Session orders, editing a wedding and two newborn sessions I completely forgot that I hadn't completed Luke's blog post yet. I know his photos have been shown on Megan Lane Photography's Facebook page for some time now, but he definitely needs a blog post too. Seriously? Talk about cuteness!

This bundle of joy arrived a few weeks early. On Mom & Dad's vacation. Yep, you heard that right. Mom was telling me that she went to the doctor (I think) the day before they left for vacation in Myrtle Beach and the doctor said that he'd see her next week. Needless to say, Luke decided he wanted to see what vacation was all about and made his debut in Myrtle Beach!

I recently found some new goodies to use in my newborn sessions. Notice the green shaggy fabric and the bunny hat + diaper cover. I found them on etsy.com, my most favorite site these days! You can find all kinds of things there! I try not to frequent it often because I tend to spend way to much time (and sometimes money) there! :)

Ashley + Josh | Married {Part One}

Ashley + Josh were married March 26. They were set up on a blind date by a co-worker of Ashley and Josh's mother, who both work at the same place as Ashley. Josh's mom was talking about him and saying she wished he could find a nice girl, because he was graduating from ECU soon and Ashley's co-worker mentioned her. They called Ashley and asked if it was ok to give him her number. Ashley agreed and a year and 3 months after their first date of dinner and a movie, he proposed!

I met Ashley at her parents house first. Here's Ashley with her baby, Macy. I know she wished Macy could have been in her wedding. She's such a good Mommy to this little pup.

Then we headed over to the ceremony site, Somerset Place where Ashley got ready. Ashley's big sister, Amber stood as her maid of honor and was a big helper for her throughout the day. Amber just got engaged a couple of days ago! Congrats Amber!

Mom even jumped in for a photo! Royce and I grew up in school together, graduated the same year, played volleyball together, etc. It was great to meet her two beautiful girls.

This family probably looks famiilar, as they frequent my blog multiple times a year. You might remember their recent beach session or Emmie's newborn session that have all been posted with in the last 4 months. I love photographing this family, how could anyone not will all this cuteness! :)

The newest addition, Miss Emmie, growing up way too fast.

Mr. Ayden, 2, loved the bunny and chicks that I had for sessions. The bunny was extremely aggitated but Ayden was determined to hold him. Once Ayden's Daddy got him out of his cage the bunny calmed down in Ayden's arms. He didn't want to give him back! :)

Mr. Luke, who's heading to Kindergarten this coming school year is a wonderful big brother who looks after his two younger siblings!
